A new strategy report for Sweden’s semiconductor sector has been produced by Svensk Elektronik and Semiconductor Sweden in collaboration with, among others, FMV, RISE, Smartare Elektroniksystem and PhotonicSweden. The strategy, which looks ahead to 2035, outlines how Sweden can strengthen its competitiveness, innovation capacity, resilience and security in a field of growing global significance.
The strategy highlights the need to develop and strengthen national areas of strength within semiconductors. By focusing on strategically important skills, promoting innovation and creating better conditions for industrial development and expansion, Sweden can take a clearer position internationally. At the same time, this work contributes to Europe’s long-term technological capability and security.
The development of the strategy is part of the national initiative Semiconductor Sweden, which is partly funded through the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth’s semiconductor initiative and for which Svensk Elektronik is the host organisation. The initiative brings together stakeholders from industry, academia and the public sector with the aim of strengthening collaboration within the Swedish semiconductor ecosystem and contributing to long-term competitiveness, innovation and resilience.
The strategy is based on extensive dialogue with the ecosystem, with input gathered through round-table discussions, interviews and surveys, amongst other means. Among the proposals in the report is the establishment of a long-term innovation programme, under which the government is proposed to invest SEK 10 billion over a ten-year period via Vinnova. The aim is for this initiative to be matched by equivalent investment from the business sector within the framework of a public-private partnership.
As part of this work, the publication The Invisible Gold has also been produced. It aims to increase understanding of the crucial role of semiconductors in both societal development and the economy.
